in December i had a meeting with mya's kindergarten teacher, the principal, and the school district speech therapist. they asked a lot of questions about her and all her ear infections, her preschool years, if she was late to talk, if she has ever had hearing loss...etc.. i wasn't expecting to be quizzed in depth over her entire life, it caught me a little off guard. we are trying to get her into speech therapy to help her speech. i have been pushing it the last few months trying to get the district to get going on getting her the help she needs. it basically came down to the fact that i didn't know if her tubes were still in or not or if her hearing was good. they wont start the program until i got both tested. i went home feeling frustrated that nothing got done and that they put it back on me. so that day i made an appointment with her audiologist. they were a few weeks out so her appointment finally came last week. her ears failed almost all tests. she has almost 90% blockage in her left ear. and 30% in her right. her hearing is so minimal, no wonder she cant figure out how to click her tongue for the k or go deep for the g. test after test i watched her listen for the noise and waited for her to click the button, and it never came time after time. noises that i could hear she couldn't. all high pitches and low deep pitches aren't there. she then ran a test to see how to brain compensates for the parts she cant hear. it was amazing to me to see how much she has to compensate for the things that seem to easy and simple to me. sentences were given through headphones and she had to repeat them back. words were wrong and/or didn't come out right, she tried and tried but it just wasn't happening for her. the poor girl. and these are such crucial years while learning to read and write. it broke my heart. i wanted to grab her and hug her and tell her she did amazing even though the results weren't quite where we want them to be. next week we meet again. run a few more tests. make sure there is no dyslexia or other things that complicate learning and speech. i also have to make an appointment with the ENT. since both of her tubes have fallen out we will need to get them put back in to drain the fluid blockage behind her ear drums. hopefully that will allow her to hear the correct pronunciation of letters and we can put all this dang ear stuff behind us once and for all!
