rupert...

my parents bought a house in Rupert a few months ago and every week my dad goes down there for a few days to work on it. it has been quite the project. it is an awesome house, lots and lots of charm. its big, around 3,000 sq ft and it needed ALOT of work. we went down a few weekends ago to help paint and get a new roof on. it turns out that when others before us reroofed the roof they just decided to nail shingles on top of the old so there ended up being 6 layers of shingles to get off. all different types and colors. it took the boys a entire 2 days to get the roof off. and about half way through the roof coming off a downpour came. i was inside painting when all the sudden water started dripping through the can lights onto the floor. i ran outside to tell the boys what was happening and everyone started to scramble for tarps and large pieces of wood to get on top of the roof to block the rain. luckily it didn't rain long and the damage wasn't too bad. the roof had slats under the shingles so when the roof was off you could see the sky, which was quite the problem when the rain came. good thing at that point we only had a few rooms exposed. the amount of nails on those slats was insane. hopefully we all were up to date with our tetanus shots.
we gave my kiddos the best jobs for the weekend. their first job was to crush the concrete curb on the driveway, each had a hammer and they spent hours hammering the concrete trying to break it up. the second was to get on the roof and hammer in the old nails. they spent even longer up there. we barely even saw them. they were such good helpers and the house is coming along!
